Extra Credit

You have TWO opportunities to earn extra credit BEFORE December 4th. I will REPLACE a zero or give extra credit points on your lowest grades.

OPTION ONE: You can bring in any of the following items for the Angel Tree Sponsorship.  If you turn in at least one item, I will give you an 80 instead of the zero. You will earn the following amounts of points for each item:

  • Boxed/Bagged foods: small=1, large=2
  • Cans: small=1, large=2
  • Toiletry/Paper: small=2; large=4
  • Ramen: 10 Packs=3
  • Lunch meat: 1 pkg=3
  • Turkey/Ham: 5lbs=15, 10lbs=20
  • School supplies: small=2, large=4
  • Chips: small=2, large=4
  • Loaf of bread: 3
  • 2 L Soda: 2

OPTION TWO: If you do not want to contribute to the Angel Tree Sponsorship, you may write a one-page response to one of the following Standardized Test Preps:

  • Many junior high and high schools around the country now require students to spend a certain number of hours each term doing volunteer work or community service. Some people believe this is an excellent idea that promotes good citizenship and cultivates compassion. Others feel that forced volunteerism is not volunteerism at all. How do you feel about this issue? Use speciļ¬c reasons and examples to support your position.
  • Most states allow people to get a driver’s license at the age of 16. Some people feel that 16 is much too young for the responsibility that comes with driving a car and that teenagers should not be allowed to drive until the age of 18. In your opinion, at what age should people be allowed to drive, and why?
  • Research shows that the average American watches as much as sixhours of television each day. Do you think this is too much? Write an essay convincing readers to spend less time in front of the TV.
  • Discuss how conveniences change people’s lives. Is this for the better? When are conveniences appropriate?
  • Explain the meaning of diversity. Give clear examples and definitions.
  • Explain pollution to a visitor from another planet. Be sure to include all sides of the discussion including historical precedence, modern experience, and current plans of action.
